Soul Casters & Cryptforge Relics: Uniting 2D Strategy with 3D Immersion

Premise

Every duel is a battle of wits and will, where each move shifts the balance of fate.

3D Weapons in a card game

The Cryptforge Relics, ancient weapons and artefacts forged from bone, blood, and shadow, grant their wielders unimaginable strength, but at what price? The Bonegrinder thirsts for carnage, the Graveborn Guard whispers of forgotten warriors, the Undead Crown tempts its wearer with ultimate knowledge, and the Throne of the Undying promises eternal rule at the risk of losing one’s very soul.

A Perfect Fusion of 2D and 3D Design

The Cryptforge Relics were designed to seamlessly integrate into Soul Casters, blending rich 2D card art with immersive 3D visual storytelling. Each relic carries a deep lore, reinforcing the game’s dark fantasy setting while maintaining clear mechanics in both dimensions. The Throne of the Undying, for example, is visually striking as a towering skeletal construct in 3D, while its card version distils that imagery into a clean, readable format. This ensures that no detail is lost, whether viewed as a card in a hand or as a fully realized object within a game environment.

Gameplay Depth and Immersion

The Cryptforge Relics are more than just artefacts; they act as a bridge between strategic gameplay and immersive storytelling. Bonegrinder’s relentless hunger for destruction is not only expressed in its jagged, grinding bone-teeth but also in its game mechanics, rewarding aggressive playstyles. Graveborn Guard, in turn, provides a visual and mechanical representation of an ever-watchful, cursed shield, protecting its wielder while whispering dark secrets. By crafting these relics with both mechanical synergy and aesthetic cohesion, the game maintains fluidity between its physical and digital presence, enhancing both player engagement and immersion.

Thematic and Mechanical Cohesion

The Cryptforge Relics expand Soul Casters’ core themes of undeath, sacrifice, and forbidden power. Each relic represents a lost legend, brought back into play through strategic choices and tactical depth. The Undead Crown offers a constant risk-reward dynamic, granting insight into the dead while pulling the wielder closer to their doom. Meanwhile, the Throne of the Undying stands as the ultimate seat of power, binding its user to an eternal, cursed reign. This thematic consistency ensures that each card feels like an organic part of the game, blending narrative, mechanics, and visual storytelling into a cohesive experience.

Strengthening the Game’s Artistic Vision

By designing the Cryptforge Relics, the goal was to merge Soul Casters’ 2D illustrations with its broader 3D visual storytelling. These weapons and artefacts embody the dark fantasy world, allowing players to visualize their influence not just as static cards but as tangible, eldritch objects that exist within the game world. Whether it’s the spectral glow of Undead Crown’s cursed runes, the eerie wooden texture of Graveborn Guard, or the grotesque, ever-hungry form of Bonegrinder, every relic maintains visual clarity and thematic depth across both mediums. This ensures that whether players are handling the cards in a deck or viewing them in a 3D game space, the artistic vision remains intact and immersive.

Bringing Soul Casters to Life:

A 3D Board and Card Game Experience

The Vision Behind the 3D Model

For my latest 3D modelling project, I set out to create a dynamic and visually compelling scene that captures a pivotal moment in a game of Soul Casters. The model features a detailed game board with cards actively in play, visually representing the strategic depth and mechanics of the game. This project is more than just a static representation; it’s an immersive depiction of how Soul Casters translates from concept to reality.

Integrating 2D and 3D Design Seamlessly

One of the key challenges in this project was merging 2D card elements with a 3D game environment. Soul Casters is a card game at its core, but the interaction of cards on a physical or digital board adds an essential layer of engagement. The cards themselves maintain a flat, illustrative style, while the board and game pieces are rendered with unique colours and intuitive design that enhance the tactile experience.

The goal was to create a model that could function in both digital and physical formats, making it adaptable for tabletop gaming, video game implementation, or even VR experiences.

Combining 2D Cards into a 3D Scene

A major aspect of this project was ensuring that the 2D card designs remained readable and visually distinct while being integrated into a fully realized 3D environment. Each card was carefully positioned and angled to simulate an actual game in progress, making sure that important details such as text, artwork, and mechanics remained clear from multiple viewpoints. By experimenting with lighting, material shading, and depth of field, I was able to create a believable diorama that mimics a real match between two players, enhancing both immersion and clarity.

The Importance of this 3D Model in my Master’s Studies

This project is highly relevant to my master's studies as it exemplifies the fusion of technical 3D modelling skills with game design principles.

By working on this model, I am not only refining my ability to create detailed, game-ready assets but also demonstrating how 3D modelling can enhance game mechanics, accessibility, and overall player immersion.

How It All Fits Together

This 3D model is not just about aesthetics, it is a proof of concept for how Soul Casters can evolve beyond a simple card game. By integrating detailed environments, lighting, and animated interactions, the game gains a new layer of engagement, whether in physical play or digital adaptations. This model serves as a bridge between traditional card game design and modern gaming technology, showcasing the potential for Soul Casters to thrive in multiple formats.

Ultimately, this project underscores the importance of hybrid game development, where 2D and 3D assets work together to create a cohesive and immersive experience. It’s a testament to how game design, modelling, and interactive storytelling can all come together to shape the future of gaming

Inspiration

This project draws inspiration from Yu-Gi-Oh! games, the Harry Potter chess game, and Magic: The Gathering (MTG), each contributing to the design philosophy behind Soul Casters and its 3D components.

Yu-Gi-Oh! games provided the foundation for the strategic, card-based mechanics, emphasizing resource management, summoning, and tactical depth. The way duels unfold, with players summoning powerful creatures and utilizing spells, mirrors the gameplay flow in Soul Casters, where Soul resources dictate strategic choices.

The Harry Potter chess game inspired the idea of bringing static game pieces to life in dynamic 3D form, transforming them from mere tokens into visually immersive elements with personality and weight. Just as the chess pieces in Harry Potter move and interact as though alive, the Cryptforge Relics and Soul Casters creatures have been designed to seamlessly transition from 2D illustrations into fully realized 3D assets, maintaining their iconic identity while enhancing immersion.

Magic: The Gathering Influence: Soul Casters takes direct inspiration from MTG in terms of strategic deck-building, mana-based resource management, and deep lore-driven mechanics. MTG’s approach to resource-based summoning through lands is reflected in Soul Casters’ Soul system, where players use the energy of their fallen cards to summon stronger creatures, cast spells, and activate artefacts.

Collaborations and Expanding Universes: One of the most compelling aspects of MTG is its ability to bring external franchises into its universe, allowing players to collect and battle with characters from Assassin’s Creed (Ezio), Final Fantasy, and Marvel (Spider-Man). This philosophy directly informs Soul Casters' potential for expansion, where future collaborations could introduce new relics, creatures, or artefacts inspired by other fantasy and sci-fi franchises. This makes Soul Casters not just a self-contained game but a flexible system that could seamlessly incorporate well-known characters, settings, and artefacts into its unique lore.

Bringing 2D Strategy into 3D Immersion: While MTG primarily operates in a flat, card-based format, its worldbuilding and mechanics suggest a larger, living universe. Soul Casters builds on this idea by incorporating 3D models of its relics and artefacts, making them more tangible and immersive. Just as MTG creates vivid narratives through card descriptions and art, Soul Casters brings those ideas to life by allowing relics like the Undead Crown or Bonegrinder to exist as both interactive 3D models and functional gameplay elements.

Ultimately, this project serves as a fusion of traditional card game mechanics and modern 3D gaming, proving that deep strategy, immersive storytelling, and seamless artistic integration can thrive across multiple gaming formats and genres.
